Charleston, the dance craze from the 1920s, was adapted in the 1930s to suit the swinging music that came out of this big band era. The basic charleston 8-count move became a part of the Lindy Hop and Lindy Hoppers invented other kicking Charleston steps to contrast with other basic steps of the Lindy Hop.
These “Tandem Charleston” steps are those where the follower is directly in front of the leader in the Charleston basic, like two people riding a tandem bike, pedaling in sync. Here they step forward and back and kick with the same feet in the same rhythm, the person behind seeming like a “shadow” and that’s why it’s also called “Shadow Charleston”. This position in the dance lends itself to different rhythms, turns and usually quite a bit of laughter!
Come learn to dance in a position you’ve probably never imagined and have a lot of fun!
